Sappi Update on Shawmut Dam – Thank you Members!

Sappi on Thursday sent a message informing the Professional Logging Contractors of Maine (PLC) that the DEP’s substantive decision relative to water quality certification for the Shawmut Dam will be postponed for up to another year, and thanked us for PLC Member outreach efforts to Governor Janet Mills’ Administration and state lawmakers, which gave them a much better understanding of the Shawmut Dam’s importance to the Sappi Somerset Mill in Skowhegan, and by extension to Maine loggers and forest truckers.
Sappi also reported that after a meeting with Governor Mills on Tuesday, she provided her assurance that her administration will not advocate for or support the removal of the Shawmut Dam, and reiterated her support for Sappi and the Somerset Mill. Governor Mills today issued a statement confirming that stance. Her statement may be viewed here: https://www.centralmaine.com/…/gov-mills-the-sappi…/
As the media has reported, The DEP and Maine Department of Marine Resources have recommended the dam be removed to maximize the ability of Atlantic Salmon to pass the dam site. Doing so would lower water levels to the point that the Somerset Mill’s water intake and wastewater discharge systems would be inoperable, which could shutter the mill.
We are optimistic that the stage has now been set for discussions that will resolve this issue once and for all. This is due in no small part to PLC Member efforts to contact lawmakers and the Mills administration. Thank you, Members, and we are confident that Sappi will remember your efforts on this issue in the future.

Hands-on program helps fill workforce pipeline in Maine’s $600M logging industry

Logging industry veteran Mike Nadeau employs a little more than 20 people at White Oak Inc., a logging and trucking company he co-owns in the Aroostook County town of St. Francis.

Last year when Nadeau needed another skidder operator to remove cut trees from wooded areas, he hired a graduate of a 12-week certificate program who hit the ground running from Day One — saving his firm around $50,000 in training costs.

Another Viewpoint/Answering the Question: ‘Is biomass a climate solution?’

The Professional Logging Contractors of Maine, the Maine Pellet Fuels Association, and the Northern Forest Center read an Aug. 13 column, Energy Matters – Is biomass a climate solution? in the Lewiston Sun Journal and Franklin Journal with dismay, and once again we find ourselves wondering why those who claim concern over climate change would focus their attention on questioning a proven and critical piece of any solution to that issue.
