Wood-pellet mill, rail connection planned for Millinocket

Nov. 21—The site of the former Great Northern paper mill in Millinocket could get new life producing industrial-grade wood pellets that would be sent by rail to Searsport for shipment and sale overseas, under a proposal announced Monday.

Commentary: Abandoning timber harvesting is not the answer

The reality is we are a wood-using society. If we don’t harvest and process the wood we use here in New England, make no mistake, the wood will be harvested and processed somewhere else and we will import it. That harvesting often will take place in other places that do not have the same environmental protections that we do. So, in addition to losing the economic activity involved in processing wood products locally, we outsource our environmental problems – out of sight, out of mind.

Maine gets closer to penning land use agreement for remote North Woods

PORTLAND, Maine — Maine officials are close to finalizing a land use agreement that supporters said would protect one of the most rural corners of the country from overdevelopment years after environmentalists raised concerns about McMansions rising in the area.
