U.S. trucking companies and other freight haulers are gearing up a campaign to allow trucks on federal highways to increase cargo loads, in the face of opposition from unions, safety advocates and the rival freight-railroad industry.

Under a yearlong pilot program, trucks on federal highways in Maine and Vermont have been allowed to weigh up to 100,000 pounds—about as much as 30 midsize cars—25% above the current 80,000 pound federal limit.
